About EV Calc Lab
EV Calc Lab is a free, ad-supported reference site for electric vehicle ownership cost. Our calculators answer the questions prospective EV buyers and current owners actually ask: how much does it cost to charge?, how much will I save vs gas?, what does a road trip cost?, is the federal tax credit worth waiting for?
Data sources
Every number in our calculators is sourced from public datasets:
- EV model specifications — battery capacity, range, MPGe, charging speeds, MSRP from the EPA's fueleconomy.gov database
- Electricity rates — state-average residential rates from the US Energy Information Administration (EIA)
- Gas prices — state-level weekly retail gasoline prices from EIA
- City data — population and metropolitan boundaries from the US Census Bureau
- Charging network specs — published rates and station counts from each network's public pricing pages
Methodology
All calculators assume 90% charging efficiency (energy from the wall vs energy in the battery) unless otherwise specified. Cost-per-mile calculations use EPA-rated mi/kWh. Range calculations apply published efficiency multipliers for temperature, speed, and climate control. Lease and loan math uses standard automotive finance formulas with money factor × 2400 conversion for APR.
What we don't do
We don't sell EVs, accept payment from manufacturers, or recommend specific dealers. Our only revenue is from Google AdSense display ads. Calculators give estimates only — verify specific vehicle and rate data with the manufacturer and your local utility before making purchase decisions.
